The term “laptop computers” refers to various different types of handheld personal computers that are used by people to conduct business on the internet and to play games. A laptop, also known as laptop computer, notebook computer, or desktop computer is a portable, small, hand held personal computer with a display screen and usually no keyboard and no external hardware. Laptops can be used in the same way as desktop computers to run desktop programs. They are often accompanied with a carrying case to hold them safe. Manufacturers make them in various sizes and price ranges.
Laptop computers are powered either by the user pushing a button or by a battery. Batteries are replaced every few years or so, depending upon their performance. Today, replacement laptop batteries are readily available at most electronics stores. Older ones are often difficult to find. Many people who own laptop computers use rechargeable batteries. Lithium ion batteries are the most commonly used.
Laptops are used for many different purposes, such as playing computer games, word processing, surfing the internet, and editing and sending emails. The memory capacity of a laptop varies greatly according to the type of laptop that one is using. Large laptops have much more memory than small laptops. There are many different brands of laptop computers. Some of the well known names in the laptop market are Apple, Toshiba, Dell, and Compaq.
Another important aspect of a laptop is its power source. Many laptops are powered by batteries, which require recharging, especially if they are left sitting on a table without being used. Some laptops even run on AC power from a wall outlet, although these models are very seldom seen.
One of the oldest forms of laptop computers was the electric typewriter, which was powered by an electric battery. Battery power lasted only a few hours and required a great deal of care to ensure that the computer was not destroyed in extreme weather conditions. More recently, laptop computers have been powered by lithium-ion cells, which require less maintenance and do not get destroyed as easily as the previous types. Most laptops will have a lithium ion rechargeable battery, which can be recharged many times before needing a replacement. Other types of laptop batteries include nickel-cadmium (NiCad) batteries, which are safe to use in all circumstances, and lithium-polymer (Li-Po) batteries, which are safe to use in any circumstance except high temperature or power cuts.
All laptop computers come with software that will allow users to edit and send emails. Many laptop computers also come with wireless Internet connections built into the computer itself. With the advent of laptop computers, it has become possible to take regular home office work and turn it into an office away from the home office.
